The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Velenkosini Hlabisa, has urged heightened public vigilance as forecasts point to above-normal rainfall and frequent thunderstorms across large parts of South Africa during the festive season.

According to the department, current projections indicate increased rainfall over the central and eastern regions. The Highveld is expected to experience regular afternoon thunderstorms, while the eastern provinces face a 30–60% chance of storms as Christmas and the New Year approach. Conditions are expected to range from warm to cool nationwide.

Hlabisa warned that while rainfall would bring relief in some areas, it also posed serious risks. “While rainfall is welcome in many areas, these conditions increase the risk of flooding, lightning, strong winds and reduced visibility on roads,” he said.

He called on communities, holidaymakers and travellers to exercise caution and to follow guidance from authorities. “Closely monitor official weather updates and heed warnings issued by authorities,” the minister said, urging the public to remain alert as weather systems intensify.

Hlabisa stressed the dangers associated with flooded infrastructure and waterways. “Avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and low-lying areas,” he said, adding that people should also “keep children and other vulnerable loved ones away from swollen rivers, streams and open water”.

He further advised households to take preventative measures against storm damage.

“Secure homes, informal structures and loose items that may be affected by strong rainfall and winds,” Hlabisa said, noting that these steps could reduce injuries and property damage.

Emphasising festive season travel and gatherings, the minister appealed for collective responsibility.

“As families travel and gather to celebrate the festive season, safety must remain a priority. We urge everyone to act responsibly, remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities to prevent avoidable loss of life and damage,” he said.
