The man accused of plotting to kill President Thabo Mbeki is to appear in court again on Friday.
Uranin Vladimir D Solomon, 41, was arrested in Cape Town on Saturday night. He was thought to be involved in compiling a dossier detailing a plot either to overthrow or kill Mbeki.
Preliminary charges against him are a conspiracy to kill Mbeki, fraud, contraventions of the act on birth and death registrations, the identification act and the act on passports and travel documents.
It is alleged that he had sent email messages regarding the planned murder of Mbeki. No details on this or the contents of the email were available on Monday.
The police still have to investigate Solomon's personal circumstances, his email, his computer's hard drive and his real identity.
It seems as if he might have three different identities and several false identity and travel documents. It is suspected that Solomon is a South African citizen.
In the Pretoria Regional Court on Monday, state prosecutor Louis Wiese asked for a postponement for further investigation, saying Friday was a provisional date for the investigators to have gathered information. Issues regarding bail will also be discussed then.
The accused will be remanded until Friday.
Outside court, police Director Phuti Setati could not confirm whether there had been an attempt on Mbeki's life.
"Solomon was arrested after we began investigating certain allegations against him. At this stage, there is no link to the Boeremag. Further investigation will determine if there will be more arrests," Setati said.
He explained that Solomon was flown to Pretoria on Sunday as the actions related to the allegations against him apparently took place in Pretoria.
Setati would not disclose anything about these allegations.
