Mdzananda Animal Clinic suffers heavy blow after truck rams through its surgical theatre

A Cape Town animal clinic has been hit hard after a truck drove into its building on Tuesday, resulting in significant damage. 

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha was damaged on Tuesday, September 3, when the truck drove straight into the clinic’s operating theatre which resulting in devastating damage. This comes a day after another vehicle drove into the fence of the clinic. 

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic and Shelter has been serving the Khayelitsha community for 29 years, and provides veterinary services, shelter, and humane education, serving 1,500 animals per month.

The Communications and Fundraising Executive for the Mdzananda Animal Clinic, Marcelle du Plessis said the entire operating theatre of the facility will need to be rebuilt. The clinic’s storage room was also flattened and requires urgent reconstruction. 

“This is damage of an enormous scale - damage we could never have budgeted or prepared for. We are devastated, but we are also grateful that no animals or staff were harmed,” du Plessis said. 

Current operations of at the clinic have been severely impacted; however, the staff remain committed to continuing to treat the animals and delivering them the best care despite reduced efficiency. 

The clinic has launched an emergency fundraising appeal to rebuild the theatre and restore it to its full functionality. 

“Every contribution, no matter the size, will help us recover from this disaster. Thank you for standing with us in this time of crisis,” du Plessis said.
