Residents living in Durban's Umbilo and Glenwood suburbs are on high alert after a juvenile baboon was spotted in the area.
It is believed that the animal stowed away on a vessel from Cape Town and got off the vessel when it docked at the Durban harbour.
According to Monkey Helpline, the baboon poses no threat to humans and people should not approach it.
"The juvie is at huge risk of being caught, killed, stoned or burnt by people who believe that baboons are witches. Baboons are not endemic to Durban and this little one will not find any of its own kind. We do hope and he or she is rescued and returned to be with other baboons," Monkey Helpline's Carol Booth shared on Facebook.
If anyone has sight of the animal, they are urged to call 082 411 5444 or 082 659 4711.
