The South African National Parks (SANParks) has begun repair and maintenance work on the Waterside Boardwalk in the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park.
The popular wooden walkway, which gives visitors a scenic and environmentally friendly way to explore the Touw River, has suffered significant damage over the past year from repeated flooding and natural weathering.
SANParks acting head of communications, Reynolds Thakhuli, said the refurbishment project, which began on Tuesday, will ensure the structure remains safe and sustainable for years to come.
“The prominent and popular boardwalk, which offers visitors a scenic and environmentally responsible way to experience the Touw River, has sustained damage over the past year due to repeated flooding events and natural weathering," he said.
"The current refurbishment project, which resumed on Tuesday, 11 November 2025, involves replacing worn-out timber sections and reinforcing the structural framework to enhance the boardwalk's stability and ensure visitor safety. Environmentally sustainable materials are being used to withstand local climatic conditions and minimise ecological impact."
Visitors are requested to adhere to all safety signage and use designated alternative routes within the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park.
"Maintenance work is expected to be completed by 31 March 2026. The Wilderness Section remains open for day visitors and overnight guests, with all other trails and facilities operating as normal," said Thakhuli.
“SANParks thanks the public for their understanding and continued support as we restore and maintain this much-loved feature of the Garden Route National Park,” he said.
The Garden Route National Park encompasses the world-renowned Tsitsikamma, Wilderness and Knysna areas, a variety of mountain catchments, indigenous forests, and fynbos areas, all valued for their diverse natural and cultural heritage.
It hosts a variety of accommodation options, unique fauna and flora, places of interest, and unforgettable views.
From rugged cliffs and hidden coves to tranquil lakes and meandering rivers, the park offers endless opportunities for adventure, including hiking, birdwatching, kayaking, and scenic drives. Rich in history and biodiversity, it’s a haven for nature lovers, thrill-seekers, and those seeking peace amidst breathtaking surroundings, according to SANParks.
