President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his deep sadness following a devastating fire that ripped through a crowded bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans‑Montana on New Year’s Day, killing around 40 people and injuring at least 115 others.
The blaze occurred early on January 1 at the Le Constellation bar during New Year’s Eve celebrations, where large numbers of revellers were gathered when flames quickly engulfed the venue.
Police and emergency services from across the canton of Valais responded, and authorities have ruled out a deliberate act as the cause remains under investigation. Identification of victims is ongoing due to the severity of the damage.
In a statement issued by Vincent Magwenya, spokesperson to the President, Ramaphosa extended condolences on behalf of the government and people of the Republic of South Africa to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, as well as to the people and Government of the Swiss Confederation during this time of profound grief.
“South Africans stand in solidarity with the people of Switzerland as they mourn this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and all those affected by this heartbreaking incident,” the President said.
He also acknowledged the efforts of emergency services and first responders who acted with courage and dedication in the face of the tragedy. He expressed confidence that the Swiss people would draw strength from their unity and resilience during this difficult moment.
