A tornado was spotted in the rural Free State between Philippolis and Luckhoff on Saturday, 18 April, as severe weather swept across parts of the province.
Images and videos circulating on social media appear to show a funnel cloud touching down in open farmland, with dark storm clouds and rotating winds clearly visible. The footage was shared by weather monitoring pages, including Storm Report SA, which described the incident as a “tornado sighting” in the area.
Another community-based page, MyCity Bloemfontein, also reported that a tornado had been seen along the Philippolis–Luckhoff route, warning that the phenomenon formed part of a broader spell of severe weather moving through the region.
Posts linked to the sighting indicated that the storm system brought strong winds, hail and heavy rain — conditions typically associated with intense convective storms capable of producing tornadoes.
At this stage, there has been no official confirmation from the South African Weather Service regarding whether the funnel observed qualifies as a tornado, nor have there been immediate reports of injuries or significant damage.
Tornadoes are relatively rare in South Africa but not unheard of, particularly during periods of unstable weather linked to cut-off low pressure systems and severe thunderstorms. Rural areas of the Free State, with wide open plains and strong storm dynamics, can occasionally experience such events.
Authorities and weather observers typically caution that not all funnel clouds make contact with the ground — a key requirement for classification as a tornado — and verification often depends on ground assessments and radar analysis.
