For patients waiting in long queues and families hoping for better care, Monday night at Wentworth Hospital felt different; someone in power had finally come to see what they go through.

KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane arrived unannounced just before 8pm, stepping into the hospital after a wave of public complaints.

The latest uproar follows a distressing incident in which a mother was seen outside the hospital cradling her young daughter, who was reportedly in severe pain after allegedly being discharged from the emergency unit with only paracetamol.

The scene sparked anger online, with one social media user writing: "This child can barely walk. Shame on you, Wentworth Hospital."

Department spokesperson Agiza Hlongwane said patients who are dissatisfied with their care have a formal route to raise concerns within the facility.

"If someone has been seen by a healthcare practitioner and they are unhappy with the level of assistance they are receiving, they don't have to leave the facility without raising their concern with whoever, with maybe the CEO or the PRO at the hospital or any of the senior managers, really," he said.

The MEC experienced first-hand the conditions that patients have been raising concerns about.

What Simelane found mirrored the frustrations many patients have quietly endured, amid strained services and visible management challenges.

"She expressed serious concern over health services and management issues," the department said.

As she walked through the facility, Simelane did not just observe; she experienced first-hand the conditions that many patients have been raising concerns about.

Her reaction signalled that the situation had struck a nerve at the highest level.

Soon after, Head of Department Penny Msimango and district officials joined her, a sign that the issues on the ground could no longer wait.

"The MEC has directed management to submit an urgent turnaround plan," the department added.
