JOHANNESBURG - On the eve of Women's Day the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) called on for greater awareness around gender violence, discrimination and education.

“The SAJBD urges all South Africans to do more to combat the scourge of violence against women in our society, combating gender-based violence and inequality is not the job of government and civil society alone,”  the Jewish board said in a statement on Wednesday.

“Our young girls should be empowered through education, skills and development.”

SAJBD added that every individual should do whatever he or she can in their own private spheres to respect, protect and support women in the country.
