Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) has issued a health advisory warning residents and visitors that Cape Town and the wider Western Cape are experiencing extremely high ultraviolet (UV) levels on Sunday, December 28, 2025, with another day of extreme UV exposure forecast for Monday.

WSAR cautioned that “unprotected skin can burn in minutes,” significantly increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration and longer-term skin damage.

The organisation stressed that the danger remains high “even on cooler or windy days,” when people may underestimate their exposure to the sun.

The advisory urges anyone heading outdoors to take preventative measures, including wearing a hat and UV-protective clothing, applying and reapplying sunscreen, seeking shade where possible, and carrying sufficient water while taking regular breaks.

Emphasising the seriousness of the conditions, WSAR said: “If you’re debating whether you need sunscreen, you already do”

Outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those visiting mountainous and wilderness areas during the festive season, were also urged to prioritise safety.

“Take it easy out there and let the mountain memories be the only thing you take home today,” the WSAR.

WSAR further encouraged the public to save the emergency number 021 937 0300, noting that the organisation is “a network of government agencies, and civilian volunteer organisations, who partner in search and rescue” across the Western Cape.

Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a separate advisory, illustrated in an accompanying graphic, warning of very hot and uncomfortable conditions expected across parts of the Western and Northern Cape.

SAWS indicated that daytime temperatures in affected areas are likely to reach the mid to high 30s, with potentially serious health impacts if precautions are not taken.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant as extreme heat and UV conditions persist, warning that failure to take basic protective measures could result in serious health consequences during the peak summer period.
