Congratulatory messages have poured in for the thousands of athletes who took on the 2025 African Bank Soweto Marathon, affectionately known as The People’s Race.
From elite runners to first-timers, participants were celebrated for their determination in one of South Africa’s most beloved mass sporting events.
This year’s marathon once again showcased Soweto as a premier sporting and cultural destination, attracting 18 000 runners from across South Africa, the continent and abroad, including entrants from France, Lesotho, Zambia and Kenya.
Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Cllr Dada Morero praised the marathon’s continued growth and its deep significance to the city.
“The marathon is an important event for Johannesburg and for Soweto, which has a rich history in South Africa’s struggle for liberation. Its continued growth signals global confidence in Soweto’s capacity and infrastructure to host major events,” he said.
Despite early morning rain and mist, participants pushed forward with determination, a reflection of the spirit that has cemented the race as a national favourite. Behind the scenes, seamless coordination among city entities, emergency services and sponsors ensured a safe and well-organised experience for all.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile awarded medals to the top three men and women in the 42km category, joined on stage by MMC for Group Corporate and Shared Services Cllr Sithembiso Zungu.
Mashatile also completed the 10km race and encouraged others to live healthy lifestyles, earning applause from the ANC and fellow supporters.
