Fans of the much-loved animated pup Bluey are in for a treat as Bluey’s Big Play The Stage Show lands at Montecasino’s Teatro this week. But it’s not just a theatre spectacle drawing crowds - the production has teamed up with Woodrock Animal Rescue to help animals in need stay warm during the harsh Joburg winter.

Fresh from a successful Cape Town debut, Bluey’s Big Play runs in Johannesburg from Wednesday, July 9 to Sunday, July 20, offering families a fun-filled theatrical adventure featuring larger-than-life puppets of Bluey, Bingo, Mum and Dad. Based on the award-winning TV show, the production follows the Heeler family through a day of creative play, music and laughter - a celebration of imagination and togetherness.

Now, the show is extending that spirit of care offstage.

In partnership with Woodrock Animal Rescue, audience members are encouraged to bring along donations of pet food, blankets, toys and even second-hand books. Collection bins will be set up in the foyer throughout the show’s run, and all contributions will go towards helping the animals in Woodrock’s care.

Founded in 1992 by Nicholas and Stella Meldau, Woodrock has become a beacon of compassion in animal rescue. The organisation doesn’t just shelter abandoned pets - it educates, empowers and uplifts communities through outreach and wellness initiatives.

“Bluey is all about kindness, family and fun,” said organisers. “This partnership is a natural extension of the show’s message - that small acts can make a big difference.”

Tickets are available via showtime.co.za and ticketmaster.co.za, with VIP options including a meet-and-greet with Bluey. All guests - including babes in arms - must have a ticket, and prices range from R100 to R900.

The 50-minute show, suitable for all ages, is presented by BBC Studios and Andrew Kay in association with Windmill Theatre Co. It has already won hearts across Australia, the UK, US, Europe, and Asia.

So whether you’re a Bluey superfan or simply looking for a way to give back this winter, this is one performance that promises joy for both humans and hounds.
