The Hangout - Don’t let the sun catch you crying

The coffee becomes a symbol for your emotional state

The sun brings a strange kind of energy along with it, doesn’t it? The dates change and we move from one season to the next, but there’s something about sunshine that goes beyond the usual health benefits. Of course, the sun helps your body produce Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” when its ultraviolet rays reach your skin. Vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium and phosphorus, both important for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. It also supports the immune system, assists with muscle and brain function, and plays a role in regulating blood pressure and blood sugar.

We often hear about depression being more common in countries that experience more darkness than light, which I cannot comment on too much because I do not know enough about mental health. I also think that life is so full of obstacles these days that even if you had your own personal sun attached to your arm like a balloon, it still might not be enough. That said, I am excited that Spring has sprung, and with it, a whole new vibe is flowing through the city. I love seeing all the leaves and grass turning green and the flowers starting to bloom. And just like those flowers, I want to grow a little too. I want to stop and smell the roses, hug a little more, and judge a little less.

It’s easy to go on the defensive when people are mean, and even easier to fly off the handle because, let’s be fair, there are emotional triggers everywhere, all day long. But we can try to breathe through them. I was chatting to one of my clever friends who told me a story about how, if someone bumps into you and you spill coffee all over yourself, it’s not about the person or the bump, it is about what was inside your cup. The coffee becomes a symbol for your emotional state. So, if your cup is full of happiness, that is what spills out. If your cup is filled with anger or sadness, then that is what pours out instead. What you carry inside is what you give to others. Thank you, clever friend. He probably explained it better than I just did, but I hope you get the idea.

I also remember the fabulous Goldie Hawn once saying that even if you are having a bad day, just smile. Your brain and body will get confused and assume you are happy. Good trick, right? I promise I am not day drinking while writing this. I am simply reminding you that, more often than not, the sun will come out after whatever storm you are weathering. Most of us are here to make a difference, to change something for the better, and to spread a little love. There are a few strange cats out there who do not seem interested in any of that, but hopefully a bit of extra sunshine lands on them too and nudges them in the right direction.

We always say we will start making changes on New Year’s Day, or on a Monday, or on the first day of a new month. But I have decided to start today. And I will hold myself to it. I am going to be a ray of sunshine in someone else’s life every single day, no matter what I am going through. I am going to take more walks, run more bubble baths, wear even more glitter than usual (if that is even possible), and dance like I am Fred Astaire.

I also had the pleasure of chatting to Nteboheng Kennedy, the manager of @Sandton Spa and a passionate advocate for balanced living. She said, “True self-care does not require a complete lifestyle change. Often, the most powerful routines are the simplest. A moment of stillness in the morning or a peaceful evening ritual can gently anchor your day. Wellness begins with small, consistent choices that support how you want to feel.”

Whatever your thing is, do more of that. My thing is music. It doesn’t matter what is going on around me or what is happening to me at a particular moment. Catching a band rocking out is my therapy, my medicine, and my escape. It is my happy place. If music is your thing too, go out and catch more live shows. I have also been visiting the most incredible art galleries and fairs lately. There is so much talent in our lovely Jozi. There are beautiful markets to explore, fun hikes to take, and don’t forget to sprinkle all the extra toppings onto your gourmet milkshake.

Go spend a morning racing super cars or go-karts. Visit that friend you have been meaning to see since last year. I am convinced I am coming back as a vampire because there simply isn’t enough time in this life to do everything I want to do. But we can try to tick a few boxes. This is not a TED Talk, just a little note to myself to keep doing the things. If you want to copy my ideas, go ahead. I am leaving them right here.

Another thing that definitely makes your heart warmer and your soul a little lighter is giving. So why not come cycle for CHOC this Sunday at Melrose Arch? The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation supports children and families affected by cancer with strength, compassion and practical care. You will get a little fitter, have a laugh and help those who need it most. That sounds like a good trade.

Also, being in nature and around animals has been shown to add years to your life. If you do not have your own furry friends, go visit the adorable kitties at the Woodrock Cat Café in Kyalami, or volunteer at your local animal shelter. Whatever you choose to do today, tomorrow, and every day that follows, walk in the sunshine. Just don’t forget your sunscreen. And always choose love.
