Johannesburg-based designer Andile Cele, popularly known as ‘Scotchisdope’, is stepping into a defining moment in his career as he prepares to showcase at Colombo Fashion Week in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
In a historic milestone, Cele becomes the first South African designer to be featured on the international platform, marking a significant moment not only for his brand but for local fashion on the global stage.
Born in Durban and now based in Johannesburg, Cele details that his journey into fashion was shaped by sport and style, an influence that continues to define his creative identity.
“My love for fashion started with my love for basketball and Michael Jordan.”
“I fell in love with Nike Jordans, and that grew into an appreciation for the clothes we wore off the court. That sparked something in me to create pieces that reflect that lifestyle.”
He says that spark gave rise to DOPE, a brand that Cele says has grown into more than just clothing.
“I keep going because of the love for what I’ve created. DOPE has built a strong, family-like community, and as we continue growing our story, that’s what motivates me.”
Among his standout achievements is the launch of his first concept store on Fox Street in the Johannesburg CBD, an innovative retail space blending streetwear with both local and international fashion.

“One of my biggest highlights has been opening my first store in Fox Street. It was the first concept store in Joburg that merged streetwear and fashion with a mix of local and international brands. And then, of course, showcasing at fashion weeks where I get to share my vision.”
Representing South Africa on such a stage is something he carries with pride and responsibility.
“I feel proud and honoured to represent South Africa at Colombo Fashion Week. There’s a responsibility that comes with it, to do my best and not let down the next group of designers. I want to help build a strong foundation so South African designers are respected globally.”
For Colombo, Cele is presenting a collection that continues the evolving story of DOPE, inspired by a bold African narrative.
“The collection expands on the story of DOPE, centred around an African tennis champion. We’re telling that story through fashion, what this champion wears on and off the court. The colours, fabrics, and prints all reflect that journey.”
As he prepares to take to the runway, Cele is looking forward to more than just showcasing garments.
“I’m excited to see how the audience connects with my vision, from the clothes to the music and visuals we’ve carefully put together. I’m also looking forward to building business relationships and exploring opportunities with retailers and wholesalers.”
Beyond the runway, the experience itself remains a source of inspiration.
“Experiencing a new culture and finding inspiration in a different environment is always exciting. It opens your mind creatively.”
At the heart of his journey is a message for young creatives hoping to follow a similar path.
“I’m motivated by the growth of the brand and the business I’m building from the ground up. I aspire to inspire. To the youth, I’d say, don’t wait for opportunities. Create them for yourself, no matter how big or small.”
His work has already reached international audiences through platforms like Soweto Fashion Week, which opened doors to showcases in Moscow and Mozambique. Now, Colombo Fashion Week represents another major step forward.
