If you were one of the millions of rugby followers around the world who didn't give France a hope against New Zealand ahead of Sunday's stunning World Cup semifinal reversal, spare a thought for Durban fan Steven Arendse.
His confidence in a Kiwi walk-over landed him on his knees on the city hall steps, puckering up to a French fan's rear end - much to the amusement of lunch-time passers-by.
Arendse's woes began at a friend's braai on Saturday night, shortly after the Springboks's semifinal defeat to Australia.
Those gathered were remarking at what a pity it was that the Boks would not get to face old rivals New Zealand this World Cup, when French supporter Joe Maurel piped up: "Don't be so sure".
He reminded his amused friends that if the French beat the World Cup favourites the following day, then the All Blacks would indeed face the Springboks in Thursday's play-off for third place.
It was then that Arendse issued a challenge that he was to regret later: "If France beats New Zealand, I'll kiss your butt on the city hall steps."
To which Maurel retorted: "I expect a French kiss on each 'cheek'."
The unthinkable happened. The shell-shocked Kiwis went down 43-31 to the French and Maurel had two reasons to celebrate. Mutual friends of the two were not slow to urge Arendse to honour his bet.
They duly met at lunch time on Monday and Maurel dropped his trousers to reveal a skimpy bathing costume with the French flag sewn onto the back for the occasion.
A red-faced Arendse hastily completed his side of the bargain and they shook hands.
Maurel said: "To be honest, it was a bet I would rather have lost. It is no picnic taking your pants down in public. But neither of us had a choice. Our friends would never have let us back out."
