Though the odds will be stacked against South Africa when they face England in their Women’s Cricket World Cup semi-final in Guwahati on Wednesday, Cricket SA Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe is optimistic about the side’s chances.
South Africa were bowled out for 69 by England the last time the sides met - in their tournament opener on October 3.
Since then, the Proteas won five matches on the trot before another poor batting display against tournament favourites Australia.
Just four days ago, SA slumped to 97 all out to conclude their group campaign against the Aussies. It means they will have to do something radical to restore their confidence, but Nkwe believes that won’t be a problem.
“The opening match was a tough lesson, but also a valuable one. The team has grown tremendously since then and would be eager to show how much they’ve progressed. There is definitely motivation to put in a strong performance against England,” Nkwe told SportsBoom.co.za.
“We are incredibly proud of the team’s achievement. Reaching the semi-finals is a reflection of the hard work, resilience, and belief within the team. They’ve shown great character throughout the tournament and continue to inspire many young players back home.”
Nkwe went a step further to say this team had the potential to not only win their semi, but also the final.
“There is strong belief within CSA that this team can go all the way. The progress over the years has been remarkable and we’ve seen consistent improvement in both individual and team performances.
“The players and management have built a strong culture, and we have full faith in their ability to finish the job.”
