Spaniard Jon Rahm is heading to South Africa for the first time next month, and there’s a genuine sense of excitement around his debut at Steyn City during the LIV Golf South Africa tournament in March.
After a strong start to the first two events on the circuit, the two-time major winner will arrive in good form next month after finishing second in Adelaide last weekend, a tournament known for its vibe and energy.
Rahm, alongside his Legion XIII teammates, is ready to challenge the field at a new and historic setting in Africa, where over 75 000 supporters are expected for the four days of golf.
He is also looking forward to playing in front of South African fans, who are known for their passion across many sports.
“I’m excited. I’ve never been (to South Africa) before, and that’s one of the aspects of LIV Golf that I really love,” Rahm said.
“South Africans are incredibly passionate about sport, especially rugby and cricket, but they’re no strangers to golf either. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun and rowdy. I have seen some pictures of the course and it looks beautiful. After seeing the build, I think I know which hole the partyhole will be like the one in Australia.”
While Rahm is excited about the travel and the atmosphere expected in Gauteng, he knows the competition will be strong. The Southern Guards GC team is looking to shine on home soil after a come-from-behind performance in Australia to finish in fourth.
Captain Louis Oosthuizen, along with Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace and Dean Burmester, has helped ensure that Steyn City is in top-notch condition for the event. They have personally given their input, and the course is expected to be a real test, especially for the international players who are unfamiliar with the layout.
Rahm and the rest of the field will embrace that challenge as they look to upstage the South Africans in front of their home fans.
If Rahm and his team and the Southern Guards find themselves in contention together on the final day, it could create a spectacular finish for supporters watching from around the world.
“Hopefully, we’re battling against the home players towards the end, because that will make for a very special atmosphere and a great crowd. I’ve always enjoyed travelling and feel very privileged to be able to visit new cities and new places.
“One of my biggest surprises recently was how much I enjoyed Hong Kong, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing South Africa as well.”
