On Saturday, Hollywoodbets Kenilworth will host the 164th running of the World Sports Betting Cape Town Met, a hallmark of South African horse racing and a showcase of equine excellence.

Known as the crown jewel of the racing calendar, this year’s Met continues its prestigious history, dating back to its inception in 1886 at Kenilworth. The Met has undergone several transformations throughout its storied history, initially contested over a mile before evolving to its current distance of 2000 metres, established since 1948.

Over the years, the event has hosted numerous legendary champions, including Sledgehammer, Politician, and Horse Chestnut, who have left an indelible mark on racing lore.

This year, eleven formidable runners will battle for supremacy, with the competition tighter than ever. Champion trainer Justin Snaith leads the charge, presenting an impressive six entrants, yet experts agree that this renewal is likely the most competitive in recent memory. Influential racing pundits debate the potential pace of this year’s race, an unpredictable aspect that could define the outcome.

While the Met’s field size has sparked lively discussions among racing traditionalists, many agree that smaller fields can heighten the spectacle. This year’s lineup, featuring eleven high-calibre competitors, emphasises quality over quantity and showcases South Africa’s finest talent.

The race is more than a contest; it is one where only the best can compete, avoiding the dilution of experience and integrity that additional underwhelming entrants might create. Historically, the Met has hosted fields of eleven runners, ensuring that all present can make a significant impact—this year boasts no shortage of proven weight-for-age performers.

Among the leading horses is Eight On Eighteen, who faced a narrow defeat by just 0.25 lengths to The Real Prince in last year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July. This year, however, Eight On Eighteen has the chance to reclaim his glory under more favourable weight-for-age conditions, and his supporters will be watching closely.

On the other side, The Real Prince arrives with momentum, fresh off a recent victory at the L’Ormarins King’s Plate, indicating he is in top form and poised to defend his honour against Eight On Eighteen’s advancing challenge.
