There will be plenty of venomous mini-battles within the grand war between the Springboks and France on Saturday night in Paris.

From the electrifying backs to the bruising forwards, fans can expect a series of fascinating one-on-ones as both sides look to gain the upper hand in what promises to be an intense showdown at the Stade de France (10.10pm kick-off). While victory will require a full 23-man effort, both the Boks and Les Bleus will lean on a few key players to set the tone.

Here’s a look at the crucial positional duels that could define this blockbuster clash.

Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu vs Romain Ntamack (flyhalf)

It will be a proper baptism of fire in the north for the young Feinberg-Mngomezulu; however, sinking won’t be an option for the wunderkind as he has shown he knows how to swim. He’s been leading the Bok attack with maturity in the southern hemisphere, but the big test will come on Saturday against an experienced French side. His decision-making on the attack, whether with kicks or when running, must be on point.

Ntamack will be eager to get France on the front foot with his attacking flair. He can rip defences to pieces when he runs with the ball. Having not played in the 2023 Rugby World Cup quarter-final loss, the French talisman will be eager to steer his team to victory.

Eben Etzebeth vs Thibaud Flament (lock)

A clash of different lock styles — Etzebeth’s raw power and intensity against Flament’s athleticism and finesse. Edging closer to 140 Tests, the Bok lock remains the heartbeat of the South African pack. His physical presence often sets the tone early, and it will be key on Saturday as the defensive effort of the Springboks looks to halt a quick-fire French start.

Flament is a tall, mobile, and deceptively powerful second-rower. He will be a key lineout figure against the SA jumpers, while the Bok defence can expect a ball-carrier that thrives in broken play with his good handling skills.

Siya Kolisi vs Anthony Jelonch (flank)

Two warriors cut from the same cloth — inspirational senior stars who lead by example with their hustle on the field. Kolisi enters his 100th Test, and his physical presence at the breakdown will be key. His defensive reads, counter-rucks, and leadership under pressure have become Springbok mainstays. Expect him to lead the line in collisions and slowing the French down at the ruck.

Jelonch is aggressive, fearless in contact, and thrives on the emotional rhythm of a game. His tackling and work rate are exceptional.

Cheslin Kolbe vs Louis Bielle-Biarrey (wing)

A battle of pure excitement on the wing — Kolbe’s trickery versus Bielle-Biarrey’s youthful flair. Kolbe remains one of rugby’s most electrifying finishers. His footwork, balance, and ability to turn defenders inside out can break open even the tightest defence. His aerial skills will also be key against the French wingers and fullback.

Bielle-Biarrey has exploded onto the scene with his pace and fearlessness. He runs clever lines, can attack space superbly, and isn’t afraid to back himself one-on-one.

Damian Willemse vs Thomas Ramos (fullback)

Two talented fullbacks who define their sides’ attacking rhythm, while fronting up as the last line of defence. Willemse brings flair and physicality from the back to compliment the attack. Strong under the high ball and dangerous on the counter, he can turn defence into attack in a heartbeat. His versatility and fearless running give the Boks an extra spark on attack.

Ramos will likely still be scarred by that conversion attempt that Kolbe charged down in the World Cup quarter-final at the Stade de France. However, he is always calm under pressure, accurate off the tee, and excellent with his tactical kicks.
