Asenele Velebayi has finally lived out his dream of joining Kaizer Chiefs, and the 22-year-old attacker could not hide his emotions after sealing the move he has long wished for.

The versatile forward penned a long-term deal with Amakhosi last Tuesday, officially becoming part of coach Nasreddine Nabi’s new-look squad.

Chiefs had been tracking the youngster for over a year, and the announcement confirmed what had been one of the worst-kept secrets of the transfer window. But while Velebayi’s signature is a huge boost for Amakhosi, his switch comes with a cloud of drama. Cape Town Spurs, the club he left behind, are refusing to back down.

After the PSL dispute resolution chamber ruled that Velebayi was a free agent following Spurs’ relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship into amateur ranks, the Cape side filed a review application with the Safa Arbitration Tribunal.

Spurs are challenging the ruling, insisting the decision is not legally sustainable. That has cast uncertainty over when Velebayi will be eligible to make his debut in Chiefs colours.

Despite the legal wrangle, the attacker is simply basking in the joy of fulfilling his dream.

“I’m a young man from Cape Town, originally from the Eastern Cape,” he said.

“I can’t even describe the feeling. When I heard the news that I was officially joining Chiefs, the first thing I did was call my mother and family to share the good news. I was so happy. It has always been my dream to come here, and I aim to make the most of this amazing opportunity.”

For a player who has spent most of his football life in the Western Cape, the move to Naturena marks a significant step both on and off the pitch.

It also comes with a weight of expectation.

Known for his speed and technical skill, Velebayi is versatile across the front line. His preferred position is wide on the left as a winger, but he has the ability to operate as a number 10 or on the right, making him a valuable option in Nabi’s system.

“I can play on the right, and as a No 10 as well, but my favoured position is wide on the left as a winger,” Velebayi explained. “I am fully committed to playing in any role that the coach wants me to.”

Chiefs supporters, who have endured several seasons of disappointment, will be eager to see whether the 22-year-old can inject the spark they have been craving.

For his part, Velebayi has already embraced the connection with the fans.

“I want to thank the supporters for the warm welcome I have received. I really hope we all have a wonderful season together,” he said.

While his official debut remains in the balance pending the outcome of Spurs’ legal challenge, one thing is certain: Velebayi has already captured the hearts of Amakhosi’s faithful.

His journey with Chiefs has begun — the wait is now for him to show it on the field.
