Nigeria’s 2026 Fifa World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign has been anything but straightforward.
With Group C tightly contested and inconsistency throughout, the Super Eagles enter their final fixture at Godswill Akpabio Stadium (6pm kick-off) with a slim chance of reaching the finals, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Super Eagles have regained momentum, going unbeaten in their last five matches, including three wins, keeping their hopes alive. However, even a victory over the Cheetahs will not guarantee qualification, as they must also rely on the result of Bafana Bafana’s clash with Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium (also 6pm kick-off).
Nigeria face a double-edged challenge.
Hosting the match gives them home advantage, and they must score at least three unanswered goals against group leaders Benin to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Ironically, a win over Benin could hand South Africa an easier path, as Bafana would then only need to beat Rwanda to progress, currently sitting two points behind the group leaders.
The Super Eagles’ previous encounter with Benin ended in a 2–1 away defeat. With better rhythm and a solid run of recent results, they head into this clash as favourites.
Nigeria’s World Cup pedigree is well established, with six previous appearances. However, this campaign has been hampered by five draws in nine matches, leaving little margin for error.
The return of striker Victor Osimhen, absent in a key match against South Africa, significantly strengthens the side. Meanwhile, Benin continue to rely on teamwork rather than individual brilliance, making them a dangerous opponent despite Nigeria’s home advantage and star-studded lineup.
As they prepare for this high-stakes encounter, the Super Eagles must deliver a convincing performance at home while also hoping for a favourable result in the Bafana game. They are yet to produce their best display this campaign, but will hope to rise to the occasion when it counts most.
