The sweat and toil of the past few years could come down to a single, crucial match as Bafana Bafana’s World Cup hopes rest on their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium (6pm kickoff).

South Africa trail group leaders Benin by two points heading into the last round, with the group leaders set for a tough contest away against Nigeria. All three teams’ fortunes could be heavily influenced by the outcomes of these concurrent matches.

Hugo Broos and his charges no longer control their destiny, but they are far from out of contention. Facing a Rwanda side that beat them 2‑0 in the reverse leg, Bafana will need several key players to step up to guide them to their first World Cup through competitive qualification since the 2002 global showpiece.

Mokoena has been at the centre of headlines in recent weeks due to the controversy surrounding his inclusion in the match against Lesotho in March, which inadvertently shook up Group C. South Africa were docked three points as he had received two yellow cards prior to that match, and despite that setback, his presence on the field Tuesday night will be crucial.

As one of the most consistent and experienced figures in the squad, Mokoena brings composure and the ability to handle pressure from his time with Mamelodi Sundowns, who frequently compete on big stages. In a game where mistakes could be costly, his discipline, vision, and leadership will be vital.

The pacey winger was substituted early against Zimbabwe, and while Broos may have felt he did not make the desired impact in the first half, his absence in the second was noticeable, especially after Zimbabwe lost Knowledge Musona to a red card.

Nkota will again be critical, with South Africa not only needing a victory but also to score multiple goals. His creativity down the left flank, ability to take on defenders, and delivery into the box will be essential to unlock a Rwandan defence likely to sit back.

Williams will once again have a reshuffled defensive line in front of him, with Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi unavailable due to suspension. Defensive options has been a recurring concern for Broos in recent qualifying rounds, making Williams’ role in guiding the backline more important than ever.

Beyond shot-stopping, his ability to communicate and organise will be crucial, especially as goal difference could become a deciding factor in the group standings.

Lyle Foster

Foster came closest to breaking the deadlock against Zimbabwe and will carry the hopes of South Africa’s attack once again. With Benin needing a win against Nigeria to guarantee their spot at the World Cup, a loss or draw in that match could open the door for Bafana.

The Burnley striker will be expected to convert the chances that come his way and, set to lead the line, will be hoping for a bit more fortune than he had against the Warriors.

Oswin Appollis

Appollis enjoyed significant possession down the left-hand side against Zimbabwe. While his delivery into the box could have been sharper, his creativity and ability to dictate play will be key in giving Bafana the edge they need to break through a Rwandan side likely to sit back.
