Traditionally, World Cup hosts enjoy favourable draws, a notion some sceptics dismiss as mere conspiracy.

This time, a twist of fate has paired hosts Mexico with South Africa in the opening match, a rematch of the inaugural game from the 2010 tournament played in the Rainbow Nation. This intriguing matchup rekindles memories of Mexico’s clash with South Africa 16 years ago and comes at a pivotal moment for both teams.

Mexico’s coach, Javier Aguirre, was at the helm in 2010 when the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg. At Friday night’s draw in Washington, he remarked: “It’s like a reunion.”

“It’s interesting because we opened the 2010 World Cup against South Africa, so it’s like a reunion,” Aguirre commented, reflecting on the historic connection between the squads.

“We started the year well, winning the Nations League against Panama and then the Gold Cup, but we didn’t finish strong in friendly matches against very tough teams. However, we are improving and remain committed to working hard.”

Aguirre’s outlook remains cautious, warning against complacency as they prepare for the opening clash with South Africa.

“There are no small opponents; we must be fully ready to meet this challenge,” he insisted.

He added: “On the other hand, our first rivals, South Africa, have had a tumultuous journey to the 2026 tournament,” referring to the administrative error that led to the loss of points for fielding an ineligible player.

Meanwhile, South Korea, ranked 22nd globally, enters the World Cup on a high note after completing an undefeated qualifying campaign.

Coach Hong Myungbo is optimistic about his team’s chances, citing a recent friendly draw against Mexico as vital to preparation. “You can’t ever assume that you can get a favourable draw at a World Cup. Our work to analyse our opponents will start now,” he stated.

South Korea is a strong contender for second place in their group, bolstered by impressive performances during the qualifying rounds.

This World Cup promises enthralling matchups, and Aguirre’s Mexicans will need to draw on previous experience as they aim to claim glory on home soil.

For South Africa and South Korea, the competition is ripe with opportunities amid their storied histories and unwavering resolve.
