The big three – Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns – had a busy winter transfer window as they strengthened their respective squads.
However, they’ve had different fortunes during the season as some new players were quick to adapt to the team, while others struggled entirely.
And so, with only a few weeks before the curtains fall on the season, we look at players who must pull up their socks or run the risk of being shipped out in June.
Kobamelo Kodisang – Sundowns
Following a lengthy spell abroad, Kodisang was expected to return home matured and with vast experience which would aid Sundowns’ challenge for another title.
But the youth product of the defunct Platinum Stars has struggled to fight for his spot in the star-studded Sundowns’ team, spending more time in the stands.
Kodisang is known for his trickery feet, pace and eye for goal when he’s coming either as a winger or false No 9, but he’s just struggled to show any of the experience he’s garnered abroad.
Selaelo Rasebotja – Pirates
Rasebotja was a surprise signing for Pirates, but given that his former SuperSport United teammates, who arrived unexpectedly at Pirates flourished, he was expected to follow suit. But that’s yet to happen.
Instead, Rasebotja has spent most of his time at Pirates on the bench, while the best game he’s played was in the MTN8 final when he made a first half cameo.
Rasebotja, who’s a box-to-box midfielder, has fallen in the pecking order so much so that Goodman Mosele who recently returned on loan from Chippa United is ahead of him.
Bongani Sam – Chiefs
The Chiefs left-back arrived at the club with high hopes as he’d become one of the few players to play for all Soweto giants, including Pirates and the defunct Moroka Swallows.
But it seems that might not be the case. Sam is yet to play an official game for Chiefs as he’s spent more time in the medical room than on the pitch.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi has struggled for left-backs, and one of his key mandates in winter is finding a left-back who’s a specialist – can defend, attack, cross and take set-pieces, among other things.
