As the Soweto Derby headlines the Nedbank Cup final this Saturday at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 3.30pm, much of the spotlight will fall on the tactical nous of both benches.
But equally, it’s the individual duels across the pitch that could prove decisive in shaping who lifts the trophy.
Football writer Smiso Msomi takes a look at five key battles to keep a close eye on:
1. Relebohile Mofokeng vs Dillon Solomons

One of the breakout stars of the season, Rele Mofokeng’s pace and creativity on the wing have added a dynamic layer to Pirates’ attack.
The 20 year old thrives in one-on-one situations and will test Solomons’ defensive discipline and positional awareness.
Chiefs’ fullback has pace to match but will need to be at his sharpest to contain Mofokeng’s trickery and prevent overloads down his flank.
2. Thabo Cele vs Thalente Mbatha
In the middle of the park, this is a battle of steel versus composure.
Thabo Cele has been a steady presence for Chiefs since his arrival, often tasked with shielding the back four and recycling possession.
He faces a stern test in Thalente Mbatha, who has grown into a central figure for Pirates with his ability to dictate tempo and play through pressure.
Control of the midfield could hinge on which of these two comes out on top.
3. Wandile Duba vs Mbekezeli Mbokazi

With semi-final hero Ashley Du Preez struggling for form , Chiefs are expected to look to Wandile Duba to lead the line.
The young striker will be up against Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who’s quietly gone about his business in the Pirates backline.
Duba offers pace and physicality, but Mbokazi has shown maturity beyond his years and will relish the challenge of keeping the young forward quiet in a high-pressure setting.
4. Inacio Miguel vs Evidence Makgopa
At centre-back, Inacio Miguel will be tasked with containing Evidence Makgopa, who has rediscovered his scoring touch in recent weeks.
Miguel has had an inconsistent debut season, and Saturday offers him a chance to leave a lasting impression.
For Makgopa, this is the stage to justify his place as Pirates’ lead striker and make a statement with silverware on the line.
3. Deon Hotto vs Glody Lilepo
This flank battle could determine which team gains the upper hand in transitions. Deon Hotto’s engine and delivery from wide areas remain key for Pirates, while Chiefs’ Lilepo has looked sharp in recent cameos.
Both players enjoy pushing forward, and whoever can better balance their defensive duties with attacking intent may tip the scales in their team’s favour.
The Soweto Derby is never short on drama—and these five battles could well shape its final chapter this season.
