Orlando Pirates have rolled out an aggressive recruitment drive ahead of the 2025/26 season, unveiling eight new signings that signal intent.

But ambition alone doesn’t dethrone a dynasty. The big question is: have these additions narrowed the gap to serial champions Mamelodi Sundowns?

While the names may not scream “headline-grabbers,” Pirates have focused on age, balance and potential.

The average age of their signings sits at around 24 — a clear sign of building for both now and the future. But in a league where Sundowns boast depth in every department, is it enough?

1. Sipho Mbule (27)

Arguably the marquee signing of the group, Mbule arrived as a free agent after running down his contract with Sundowns. The creative midfielder has long been admired for his vision and range of passing, but questions remain over his consistency. If Pirates can manage his conditioning and focus, they may have pulled off one of the most astute moves of the window.

2. Tshepang Moremi (24)

A speedy winger who made his name at AmaZulu, Moremi brings flair and directness to Pirates’ wide areas. His pace and ability to stretch defences offer something different, although he’ll need to improve his end product to compete with Sundowns’ polished wide options like Thapelo Morena and Neo Maema.

3. Yanela Mbuthuma (23) & 4. Nkosikhona Ndaba (22)

Both from Richards Bay, these are developmental signings. Mbuthuma is a pacy, direct forward still learning the tactical nuances of top-level football. Ndaba, a left back, is physically strong and athletic — traits that fit well into Pirates’ defensive structure. However, both will need time to adapt to a club with far greater demands.

5. Masindi Nemtajela (23)

From Marumo Gallants, Nemtajela offers versatility across the front line and flashes of raw talent. He’s still untested in pressure environments but has the technical base to grow under proper guidance.

6. Sinoxolo Kwayiba (25)

A creative attacking midfielder from Chippa United, Kwayiba is one of the more refined additions. His passing and ability to break lines make him a potential asset in unlocking low blocks — something Pirates struggled with last season. He may be key in matches where fine margins decide results.

7. Tshepo Mashiloane (23)

The right back joins from Baroka FC and provides cover for Thabiso Monyane. Quick and adventurous, Mashiloane suits a high-tempo game, but will need to prove himself defensively against the league’s top wingers.

8. Sihle Nduli (29)

The defensive midfielder arrives from Stellenbosch FC with experience and a disciplined approach. At 29, he brings stability and leadership in midfield, but whether he can match Sundowns’ tempo and tactical sharpness is another matter.

Conclusion:

Pirates have added age-appropriate players with potential — but whether they are title-winning calibre remains debatable. Sundowns still operate on a different level, with CAF experience, squad depth, and a refined tactical identity.

For Pirates, the focus now shifts from signings to system integration.

Eight new players bring energy, but unseating Sundowns will require more than ambition — it will demand near perfection.
