AmaZulu FC face one of their toughest assignments early in the season as they travel to Loftus Versfeld Stadium to meet reigning Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday night 7.30pm.
Arthur Zwane’s charges began their campaign with a narrow but confidence-boosting 1-0 victory over Orbit College at Princess Magogo Stadium over the weekend. Now, their focus shifts to a far sterner test against a side that has ruled South African football for years.
Sundowns, meanwhile, were held to a frustrating draw by Chippa United in their opening match of the season — dropping points in a rare early slip-up.
That result will likely add extra urgency to their performance against Usuthu as they look to quickly reassert their dominance. While Saturday’s opener was a test of patience, this clash will demand defensive discipline, intelligent transitions, and ruthless finishing from AmaZulu.
Zwane will be encouraged by his new-look rearguard, particularly the arrival of Keegan Allan to partner the experienced Taariq Fielies at the heart of defence.
Allan, speaking ahead of the match, acknowledged the strength of Sundowns’ squad but stressed that AmaZulu have their own qualities to rely on.
“(The coaching changes and the draw) doesn’t change much because if you look at their squad, it’s filled with national team players, the highest standard of players,” he said.
“The proof has been in their performances throughout the years but we know our own strength and quality and we just have to ensure that we use that.”
In midfield, Bongani Zungu’s inclusion adds a layer of intrigue. The seasoned midfielder will be facing his former club, bringing both familiarity with Sundowns’ style and a point to prove.
His ability to read the game and disrupt opposition rhythm could prove vital in denying the champions space to operate.
Alongside him, Pule Ekstein’s creativity and quick thinking will be key in transitioning defence into attack, especially in moments where Usuthu can catch Sundowns unbalanced.
Leading the line, newly-signed young striker Thando Ngwenya will relish the chance to test himself on one of the league’s biggest stages.
His mobility, sharp runs in behind, and hunger to make a mark could trouble a Sundowns defence missing the influential Khuliso Mudau through injury.
This is not just about securing points for Usuthu — it’s about proving they can go toe-to-toe with the very best.
A disciplined defensive performance, combined with quick, purposeful counterattacks, could give them a fighting chance to return from the capital with a positive result.
Zwane has urged his side to be bold in their approach. If AmaZulu can keep their shape, take their moments, and silence the Loftus crowd, they may just script one of the early-season surprises.
