The thrill of victory continues to resonate in the Kaizer Chiefs camp as the team approaches their upcoming Betway Premiership showdown against Richards Bay at Soccer City on Tuesday.
Chiefs’ spirits have soared after back-to-back triumphs in the opening rounds of the Premiership, and the players are determined to maintain their momentum.
Left-footed defender Bradley Cross, however, has issued a stark reminder to his teammates: “There’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance.”
His words echo the need for balance as the team looks to build on its early-season success while avoiding the pitfalls of overconfidence.
“This season has been tough, and on Tuesday, it was a good opportunity for us to see how we’re going to work through this season. I feel we’ve come together as one, as a unit,” said Cross.
“It has been a good start for us, especially to win two games off the bat. We must just stay grounded because there’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance. We must take it game by game.”
Cross admitted that his own performances had not always won over the Chiefs fans, and he also faces competition for a place in central defence.
“It is normal to receive constructive criticism. It helps me as a player to improve,” he said.
“To help the team go forward, I need to improve. Whether I make mistakes or not, it’s also good to have healthy competition for that position.
“Having competition is good because you improve and you don’t get complacent. Having guys in the same position helps me to improve, and besides, it’s also good for the squad depth.”
Chiefs, Cross added, will stay focused on the task at hand rather than dwell on their two league wins.
“There is a lesson which says there’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance. I think last season we were a little bit excited when we started,” said Cross.
“We’ve learned from that. We’ve said to each other, ‘Let’s take every game step by step, one game at a time.’”
After two games, Richards Bay are winless, having scored one goal and conceded three.
