Minnesota United have become the latest club to join the race to sign Orlando Pirates starlet Relebohile Mofokeng.
According to Soccer Laduma, the club has submitted a lucrative offer worth $2 million (around R35 million) for the forward, whose future with the Sea Robbers has been up in the air since the conclusion of last season.
The report further states that discussions between the two clubs are ongoing, and a deal looks set to be agreed.
The American club is set to be boosted by a $7.5 million (R132 million) cash injection after agreeing a deal to sell Canadian forward Tani Oluwaseyi to Spanish side Villarreal.
Should Mofokeng complete the move, he will link up with fellow South African Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who has been a popular figure at the club since 2022.
Other South Africans currently in Major League Soccer include FC Dallas’ Tsiki Ntsabeleng and Toronto FC’s Cassius Mailula. Defending in MLS has even produced viral moments, with 21-year-old Olwethu Makhanya drawing headlines earlier this year when he stood his ground against Lionel Messi in a league clash.
Mofokeng moving to the United States might not sit well with Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, who has not called up Hlongwane or any of the other South Africans, despite their strong performances.
If the deal goes through, Mofokeng’s transfer would not only represent a major step forward in his career but also signal the growing influence of South African talent in Major League Soccer. With increasing interest from abroad, the young attacker’s journey could pave the way for more local stars to showcase their abilities on the global stage.
