Durban City defender Terrence Mashego has emphasised the need to win this weekend’s semi-final against Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup, describing it as a massive occasion for the club's younger players.

Securing the trophy would be the "cherry on top" of an impressive debut top-flight season for the Durban outfit. Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm on Saturday at Chatsworth Stadium.

Speaking to the media during a training session on Wednesday at the UKZN Howard College Campus, the 29-year-old reflected on his own history with the competition.

Mashego knows exactly what it feels like to be a winning underdog, having famously lifted the trophy with TS Galaxy during their 2019 campaign while still competing in the National First Division (NFD).

Mashego believes collective belief will be the deciding factor on Saturday.

"We've done pretty well so far this season, so I believe we need to reward ourselves with the Nedbank Cup. There are still players here experiencing the Premiership for the first time, and this is a major opportunity for them to win silverware," he explained.

Durban City’s analysis of Casric Stars has sparked a degree of caution, given the lower-league side's reputation as giant-killers after knocking out the likes of Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows to reach the last four.

Coach Pitso Dladla also commended the way Casric’s mobile forwards complement their stubborn defensive line. Mashego echoed those sentiments, noting that anything less than their best would not be enough.

"They are dangerous from set-pieces and on the counter-attack; they are a complete team. We simply have to bring our A-game," Mashego added. "I think we also owe it to our fans, especially at Chatsworth. They’ve been there every week, so it would be fantastic to close the season with the Nedbank Cup. I know it’s possible because I’ve done it before with TS Galaxy. We just need to believe."
