WITH the growing evolution of global travel trends, travellers are seeking more than just a getaway, from sleep-focused retreats and AI-driven planning to eco-conscious travel and immersive cultural storytelling.
A recent report by Trend Hunter highlighted the trends and offered suggestions of how local travel products could capitalise on them.
Among the trends are local heritage-inspired stays, wellness and sleep retreats, sustainable amenities and educational, science-infused travel.
It also highlighted digital first - GenZ booking trips based on what looks good online, as well as art meeting experience, AI travel planners and chatbots, and hybrid camping experiences.
According to South African Tourism's Analytics and Insights Unit, the report serves as a powerful tool for future-proofing travel offerings.
Suggestions from South African Tourism in terms of opportunities for local travel products include more township stays, safari lodges with indigenous design, and partnerships with local artisans, or retreats, spas, or nature escapes offering sleep packages that incorporate tranquil natural landscapes or more glamping options near major metros.
"With our biodiversity and astronomy hotspots like Sutherland, SA can shine by offering more curated nature and science-based experiences, great for families, school groups, or Gen Z wanderers seeking knowledge," said South African Tourism in a statement.
The statement added blending art and tourism by hosting pop-up exhibitions in nature reserves, turning wine farms into living canvases, or offering AR-guided street art walks in Joburg and Cape Town.
