Johannesburg - Samsung’s Galaxy A56 5G is the South Korean manufacturer's latest push to dominate the country’s fiercely competitive mid-range smartphone market. With upgraded cameras, new AI features and long-term software support, the A56 5G aims to deliver a flagship-like experience at a far more accessible price point.

A refined, more premium design

Samsung has given the Galaxy A56 5G a noticeable redesign. Measuring just 7.4 mm thick and weighing 198 g, the device feels slim, modern and unexpectedly high-end for a mid-range phone.

The triple camera system is arranged vertically in a cleaner, more minimalist layout, aligning with Samsung’s latest design language across its smartphone lineup.

Available in Awesome Graphite, Awesome Lightgray, Awesome Olive and Awesome Pink, the A56 5G offers a stylish aesthetic backed by practical durability. Its metal frame, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, and IP67 water- and dust-resistance rating give it an edge over many similarly priced rivals.

A bright and impressive display

One of the standout features of the Galaxy A56 5G is its 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display. Samsung has equipped it with 1 200-nit Vision Booster technology, dramatically improving outdoor visibility - an area where mid-range smartphones often fall short.

Whether you’re streaming Netflix, scrolling TikTok or gaming, the colours are rich, blacks are deep and overall clarity is excellent. While it lacks the adaptive refresh rate of higher-end models, it remains one of the best displays in its class.

Performance boosted by AI

Under the hood, the A56 5G is powered by an upgraded Octa-core chipset, designed to handle everyday multitasking, streaming and gaming without noticeable slowdown. Storage options go up to 256 GB, and the improved cooling system helps maintain consistent performance during longer sessions.

Camera system sees meaningful upgrades

Samsung has armed the Galaxy A56 5G with a 50 MP main camera, backed by a 12 MP ultra-wide lens and 5 MP macro lens. Daylight photos are crisp, colourful and well-balanced, with the phone automatically enhancing skies, foliage and faces.

Low-light performance has improved compared to last year’s model, though it still falls short of flagship-night mode results. Users can also expect smoother and more accurate colour reproduction in Super HDR selfie video, one of the device’s new video features.

Long-lasting battery life

With its 5 000 mAh battery, Samsung claims the A56 5G can offer up to 29 hours of video playback. During testing, the device held up exceptionally well, comfortably lasting a full day of heavy usage. Efficient battery optimisation and the upgraded processor make it a reliable choice for users who work on the go or consume lots of media. Charging remains standard rather than ultra-fast, but the endurance helps make up for it.

The Samsung Galaxy A56 5G is one of the strongest mid-range contenders of 2025. With its sleek design, sharp display, camera improvements, AI features and exceptional battery life, it offers a well-rounded package without the flagship price tag. Samsung has once again refined its A-series formula and the result is a device poised to be a South African favourite.
