Following a dramatic police pursuit in Limpopo, a Gauteng police officer who was wanted for the murder of a fellow sergeant and the attempted murder of his wife committed suicide.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the incident began on Saturday, October 11, when the suspect, a sergeant, allegedly shot and killed a female colleague, who was also a sergeant. The following day, he reportedly shot and wounded his wife.
The deceased, a 53-year-old police sergeant, was reportedly attached to the Presidential Protection Service (PPS) in Pretoria.
"It is alleged that on Saturday, 11 October 2025, the Sergeant fatally shot a female Sergeant, also a member of the SAPS in Pretoria, and on Sunday morning, 12 October 2025, he shot and wounded his wife in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng."
Ledwaba added that before the officer took his own life, he allegedly fired a shot at police officers who had cornered him in Limpopo along the R555 road near Burgersfort on Sunday, October 12.
"Following intelligence about his movements, Limpopo police intercepted the white Nissan vehicle he was driving. The suspect allegedly fired a shot towards police officers and, when cornered, turned the firearm on himself. The firearm used was confirmed to be a state-issued service pistol. He added.
Meanwhile, Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident, expressing deep concern over the ongoing loss of life from domestic-related violence, particularly among law enforcement officers.
“This tragedy once again highlights the urgent need for members to seek help when facing personal difficulties. We remain committed to supporting the well-being of our members while upholding the rule of law,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
