Police in Limpopo have launched a manhunt after a suspected armed robber was shot and arrested during a shootout with officers following a business robbery on Monday morning.

The 23-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with a robbery at a general dealer in Rapotokwane village, under the Rust de Winter policing precinct, while at least two of his accomplices remain on the run.

According to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, three African male suspects allegedly targeted the shop on Monday, January 5. Two of the suspects reportedly entered the store posing as customers.

“While at the counter, one of the suspects produced a firearm and threatened the employee, demanding cash. An undisclosed amount of money was taken,” Mashaba said.

He added that the second suspect allegedly moved behind the counter and stole several items, including cartons of cigarettes and a flash machine. The suspects then fled the scene and joined a third accomplice who was waiting nearby in a black Toyota Yaris.

While attempting to escape, the suspects encountered police officers who were conducting routine patrols in the area. A shootout ensued between the suspects and the police.

“During the exchange, one suspect was shot by the police. He was immediately transported to hospital under police guard and placed under arrest,” Mashaba said.

Following the shootout, the suspects abandoned their vehicle on the side of the road. Police confiscated the Toyota Yaris and recovered a pistol with an empty magazine at the scene.
