The City of Ekurhuleni is grappling with concerning news regarding its Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for Roads and Transport Management, Andile Mgwevu, who has reportedly gone missing after a vehicle he was travelling in was swept away by devastating floodwaters in Mozambique.
SA authorities have reportedly sent a delegation to assist.
''The City of Ekurhuleni notes with concern reports alleging that the Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Roads and Transport Management, Cllr Andile Mngwevu, is missing following a vehicle being swept away by severe floodwaters in Mozambique.
''At this stage, these reports remain unverified,'' the city of Ekurhuleni stated.
The city, through the mayor, is actively engaging the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the Office of the Gauteng Premier. This engagement aims to establish the facts regarding this matter with Mozambican authorities through official diplomatic channels.
''We urge members of the public and the media to exercise restraint and avoid speculation while verification processes are underway.
''The safety and well-being of all affected persons are our primary concern.
''The city will provide official updates as soon as verified information becomes available,'' the city added.
