South African music duo Mapara A Jazz (Leonard Malatji and Mano Nephawe) have returned home safely following a frightening incident in Ethiopia, where they were reportedly kidnapped.

The “John Vuli Gate” hitmakers shared their relief and gratitude on social media on Monday, October 27, thanking everyone who supported them during the ordeal.

Posting a photo from the OR Tambo International Airport, the duo wrote: “We’re finally home! We're grateful to say that we are safely back home. We want to sincerely thank everyone who showed us love, concern, and support during this difficult time - from both Ethiopia and South Africa."

"A very special thanks to Black Diamond VIP Protection for their incredible effort, professionalism and care throughout this entire journey.”

The group had initially announced on Monday, October 20, that they would be performing in Ethiopia on Saturday, October 25.

They documented their journey on Facebook, starting with a morning post on Thursday, October 23, showing them at the OR Tambo International Airport, ready to board their flight. Later that evening, they posted from Bole in Addis Ababa, joking: “Guys, we are in Ethiopia. Please pray for us so that we may not see someone without a chin.”

Their trip took a troubling turn yesterday morning when they posted that they had been kidnapped and urgently needed help. One member even shared a photo of his injured face.

The details surrounding the kidnapping, including the circumstances that led to the injury, have not been made public.

The incident highlights the risks that can occur while travelling internationally, even for high-profile visitors.

Travellers can take several steps to reduce risk and stay safe abroad:

  • Research your destination: Before travelling, learn about the local environment, including any areas that may be unsafe or prone to crime. Government travel advisories provide valuable information about potential risks.
  • Use trusted transportation: Arrange transportation through reputable companies or official channels. Avoid accepting rides from strangers, particularly in unfamiliar areas.
  • Stay connected: Keep friends or family informed about your whereabouts and plans. Sharing your location through secure apps can provide an added layer of safety.
  • Limit public sharing: While social media is a useful tool for connecting with fans or friends, avoid posting real-time travel plans or locations that could make you a target.
  • Hire security when necessary: For public figures or travellers to higher-risk destinations, consider professional security services. Trained personnel can assist in planning safe routes and managing potential threats.
  • Emergency contacts: Keep a list of local emergency numbers, including the police, embassy, and medical facilities. Being able to quickly contact authorities can be crucial in an emergency.
  • Trust your instincts: If a situation feels unsafe or uncomfortable, remove yourself immediately and seek help from authorities or trusted locals.
