Though they are cute and adorable, travelling with a toddler can be a daunting yet ewarding experience for a parent.

The festive season is upon us, which means parents everywhere are preparing for the whirlwind of activities that come with it.
With roughly 35 days to keep children entertained during December and January, the excitement can quickly morph into sheer chaos - especially when toddlers are part of the mix!
Family travel with young children often feels like trying to decorate a Christmas tree during a hurricane. They’re adorable yet unpredictable, turning every travel plan into a potential adventure - or misadventure.
Navigating holidays with toddlers demands more than just good intentions, as Shaun Lamont, managing director of First Group Hotels and Resorts and an experienced parent, understands.
It’s all about crafting an experience that caters both to their needs and to your sanity.
With that in mind, Lamont has shared five tried-and-true strategies to ensure your festive getaway is one that everyone can actually enjoy.
Master the car journey
If you’re driving to your holiday destination, timing is crucial. Aim to leave around your toddler’s nap time to maximise the journey’s ease. Pack a ‘surprise bag’ filled with inexpensive toys like sticker books, mini cars, or a Magna-Doodle.
Hand these out at regular intervals to keep excitement levels high during long stretches on the road. Don’t forget to stock the car with an array of snacks to keep energy levels up and crankiness at bay.
Remember, frequent pauses are key - plan to stop every two hours so your little one can run around at a petrol station playground.
Those quick breaks are worth every minute added to your travel time.
Survive the flight
Flying with a toddler doesn’t have to be a flight of fancy. A well-packed carry-on can be your best friend. Include snacks, extra clothes, wipes, and plenty of entertainment options.
When you land at the airport, let your little one burn off energy before boarding.
If your child starts to act up during the flight, remind yourself that you’re not alone - other passengers are likely to have endured similar experiences.
A touch of understanding goes a long way!
One big activity per day
When it comes to planning, less truly is more. Commit to just one significant activity each day - be it a morning at the beach, visiting grandparents, or splashing around at the resort pool.
Toddlers thrive in environments that aren’t jam-packed with plans; over-scheduling can lead to grumpy little travellers.
Instead, allow ample time for free play, walks, or a story session. Some of the most joyful moments arise from the simplest of outings.
Routine is gold
Toddlers love their routines! Even while on holiday, aim to keep mealtimes, naptimes, and bedtimes consistent.
It might feel tempting to indulge in a spontaneous extra outing, but trust me - keeping to their schedule will assist in maintaining calm.
Prevent potential meltdowns by sticking to their established rhythms, and you’ll thank yourself later.
Time to recharge
The festive buzz can be overwhelming, not just for adults but for toddlers, too. If you start noticing signs of discomfort, like whining or clinginess, find a quiet corner to retreat to.
Whether it’s reading together or snuggling for a nap, a little downtime does wonders. A well-rested toddler means a more manageable companion, which is a respite for parents as well.
And don’t hesitate to consider hiring a babysitter for a night out, allowing you some much-deserved adult time.
“It’s not about getting it right all the time. Keep things simple, take what works, and remember: your toddler doesn’t need perfect - they just need you," says Lamont.
