There are journeys that take you from one place to another, and then there’s the Blue Train, where the journey itself is the destination.

Recently, a group of content creators and media experienced this legendary luxury train, traveling from Tshwane to Cape Town, with stops in Kimberley and Matjiesfontein, traversing four provinces and some of South Africa’s most stunning landscapes.

A journey of luxury and elegance

The Blue Train experience is the epitome of luxury travel. Guests stay in De Luxe Suites, each thoughtfully designed with plush bedding, rich wood paneling, brass accents, and large windows that offer uninterrupted views of the passing scenery.

Suites have private marble bathrooms, soft towels, and curated toiletries, giving the comfort of a five‑star hotel on rails.

The dining car sparkles with fine china, crystal glassware, and elegant chandeliers, while the lounge and observation cars invite you to relax in velvet armchairs and polished wood surroundings as South Africa unfolds before your eyes.

“The Blue Train is a unique brand; we create memories. 99% of our guests are always happy. Teamwork is key, and treating guests like queens and kings makes all the difference,” says Mamosa Matlhatsi, Food & Beverage Manager, a 24‑year veteran of the train.

Day One: Champagne, laughter and entertainment

Day one set the tone for the journey. As the train departed from Tshwane, guests toasted the start of the adventure with glasses of champagne while exploring the beautifully designed lounge and observation cars.

The atmosphere was relaxed and celebratory. Throughout the afternoon, guests mingled, played board games and took in the passing scenery.

Later in the evening, the train transformed into a lively social space. Following dinner, guests enjoyed entertainment that ranged from karaoke and music to casual games, a reminder that even in luxury travel, the best moments are often shared with others.

Day two: A journey through history

The following day offered a slower pace, allowing guests to fully appreciate the experience of travelling by rail.

Large windows framed the vast South African landscape, golden fields, distant mountains and quiet rural towns passing by like scenes from a moving painting.

The train made a scheduled stop in Kimberley for one of the journey’s most fascinating excursions.

Guests disembarked to visit the famous Big Hole and the Kimberley Diamond Museum.

Known as one of the largest hand-dug excavation sites in the world, the Big Hole is a powerful reminder of South Africa’s diamond mining history. Between 1871 and 1914, thousands of miners dug the enormous crater by hand in search of diamonds, extracting more than 2,700 kilograms of the precious stones.

The site played a crucial role in shaping Kimberley’s development and the global diamond industry.

After the tour, guests returned to the train for another evening of elegance, culminating in a formal dinner in the dining car, a sophisticated affair where fine cuisine and conversation flowed as smoothly as the train itself.

Day three: Matjiesfontein’s timeless charm

Our final stop was Matjiesfontein, a tiny Victorian town founded in 1884 by Scottish railway pioneer James Douglas Logan. Once a fashionable health spa and railway watering stop, Matjiesfontein today feels like a step back in time, with beautifully preserved 19th‑century buildings and a peaceful atmosphere that stands in contrast to the bustling world outside.

Matjiesfontein is also famed for its ghostly legends. At the heart of the town stands the Lord Milner Hotel, built in 1899, where Lucy and Kate are said to still linger.

Lucy is often described as a vague apparition glimpsed wandering the corridors and staircases in an old‑fashioned negligee, while Kate, thought to have been a young nurse in the colonial era, has been reported in the loftier sections of the hotel where she once socialised with soldiers during the town’s early days.

Locals and visitors alike share stories of unexplained footsteps, shifting shadows, and the gentle sensation of a presence nearby, making Matjiesfontein one of South Africa’s most talked‑about haunted heritage towns.

The day’s exploration wrapped up with a final leg to Cape Town, where guests disembarked enriched by an experience that blended breathtaking scenery, historical discovery, and elegant comfort.

Service that makes the journey exceptional

None of this would be complete without the team that brings the journey to life.

“Being part of The Blue Train legacy means I have lived my passion for the past 24 years. I have no regrets,” reflects Mamosa Matlhatsi, who began as a butler and now serves as Food & Beverage Manager.

From hosting dignitaries to creating lifelong memories for guests, the staff’s commitment to personalised service is the backbone of the Blue Train’s enduring reputation.
