The South African Brandy Route explores the cultural heritage of brandy in South Africa.

South Africa’s story with brandy is as old as its recorded history.
The first distillation of “brandewijn” - “burnt wine” in Dutch, took place in Table Bay in 1672, making brandy the oldest spirit in the country.
More than 330 years later, it has become not only an award-winning drink but also a symbol of cultural identity.
This Heritage Month, South Africans are being invited to rediscover that legacy with the launch of the South African Brandy Route.
The route introduces a modern way to experience a spirit deeply woven into the country’s heritage.
From historic cellars in the winelands to contemporary cocktail bars in the heart of Cape Town, the journey celebrates both the tradition and innovation that define South African brandy today.
The route has been designed around Brandy Homes - accredited distilleries offering tastings, tours and food pairings and Brandy Hubs, which act as urban gateways where visitors can enjoy curated cocktails.
Upgrades across the 19 Brandy Homes included enhanced training in hospitality and product knowledge, ensuring visitors enjoy world-class service alongside the flavours.
Christelle Reade-Jahn, Director of the South African Brandy Foundation, explained that the initiative is more than a tourist trail. She says the SA Brandy Route represents “a journey into South African heritage,” with each Brandy Home and Brandy Hub telling a story of place, people, and craft.
