The safety of women while using e-hailing platforms in the country is once again in the spotlight.
A woman in Cape Town has shared a voice recording of a harrowing experience using the Uber platform.
According to the rider, Aylins (@aylins-era), she was completing a ride in the Mother City when the driver, Chadley Wade, allegedly threatened to have her gang-raped and killed.
“Welcome to South Africa. An Uber driver threatening to kill me and do unthinkable things to me over 5 seconds of having my lights on to check something,” she said.
In the video, the driver is also heard threatening to have a train run her over and getting rid of her phone, with no one ever seeing her again.
“Mind you, we are on the land road with no one around for miles and miles when he is describing to take me to places and what he would do there just because he thinks I disrespected him by having my lights on for a moment,” she revealed.
According to Aylins, the recording was taken during the first 30 seconds of her ride.
She also claimed that there are more explicit voice bites and videos.
“In the end, I had to be on the phone acting like I was having a normal conversation with my friend til I arrived, so he doesn't act on his thoughts (all girls know what I'm talking about),” said Aylins.
After the video trended, Wade took to TikTok and posted a video in an attempt to clear his name.
He alleges that the rider was "childish, disrespectful and ‘bluntly rude" to him after he asked her to switch off a flashlight while he was driving.
“I told her, you know what, ma'am, you’ve been disrespectful since I picked you up. Since we started this trip, you’ve been disrespectful. I haven’t been disrespectful to you once. I also told her that if it was anybody else, this would’ve gone very wrong or worse."
"It wasn’t as if I was giving her a direct threat. It was just me speaking about the scenario, how bad things happen to bad people. That’s all that it is. She cut that video to where it seems as if I gave her a direct threat, which was not the case,” he said.
In response to the incident, an Uber spokesperson stated, “What has been described is completely unacceptable, and we have zero tolerance for such behaviour. We are urgently investigating this matter, and any driver found in breach of our Community Guidelines will lose access to the platform."
"Safety is our top priority, and we continue to strengthen measures to protect everyone using the app. Riders also have access to a range of in-app safety features, including audio recording, RideCheck and an emergency button.”
