Bloemhof, a tranquil little town on the Vaal River in the North West province, has just clinched the coveted title of "South Africa’s Town of the Year 2025" - a surprise win that will put this quiet riverside destination firmly on the national map.
In the popular "Kwêla Dorp van die Jaar" competition, Bloemhof outshone some of South Africa’s best-loved small towns to take the top spot.
The competition is an annual South African contest hosted by the TV show Kwêla to find the best small town based on public vote
The competition involves towns being featured on the show and the public voting via SMS to select the winning town.
Its victory not only celebrates community spirit and charm but could also spark renewed interest in the town’s property and tourism markets.
The town received a R1 million cash prize from Lottoland to be used for town development, in addition to marketing value from KykNET.
Located about 120 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg, Bloemhof triumphed over eight strong competitors, including Rehoboth in Namibia, which took second place, and Wilderness in the Western Cape, a perennial favourite that came in third.
KwaZulu-Natal’s relaxed coastal escape, Pennington, followed closely in fourth position. Other towns that made the shortlist included Fauresmith (Free State), Mookgophong/Naboomspruit (Limpopo), Richmond (Northern Cape), Port Alfred (Eastern Cape), and Witrivier (Mpumalanga) - a lineup that reads like a dream itinerary for a true South African road trip.
Steeped in history, Bloemhof dates back to 1864 when it was founded during a diamond rush.
The town’s name originates from the farm Klipfontein and a farmer’s daughter who decided to plant a garden there, calling it “Bloemhof,” meaning “flower court” or “flower garden” in Dutch.
Today, the town thrives on agriculture with maize and cattle farming form its backbone, but it’s also carving out a niche for outdoor enthusiasts.
With the Vaal River at its doorstep, Bloemhof offers prime fishing, boating, hiking, and water sports, along with the small-town serenity that city dwellers long for.
While coastal favourites like Wilderness and Pennington draw those seeking sea views and golf-course living, Bloemhof’s charm lies in its authenticity, slow pace and where the locals greet you by name.
