“It’s not about the money, it’s about the experience.” These are the words of popular YouTube couple Addison and Judy Logan, creators of "The Logan family", as they consider a major lifestyle change.

The pair, along with their son TJ, are contemplating ditching traditional housing in favour of life on the open road in a camper or recreational vehicle (RV).

The decision comes at a significant moment for the family, who recently revealed they are expecting their second child.

A bold move towards van life

The Logans have launched a TikTok series documenting their plans to embrace RV living, offering followers a behind-the-scenes look at what could become a life-changing journey.

Their goal is to travel across South Africa while raising their young family in a mobile home.

According to the couple, their son - who is already homeschooled - will continue his education while they travel, making the transition to van life more feasible.

The series began with the couple exploring different vehicle options.

Prices ranged from approximately R774,900 for a second-hand van to around R1.3 million for a brand-new model.

“This could be the best or worst decision we’ve ever made,” they said in one of their videos.

RV living in South Africa vs the United States

While RV and van life are relatively common in the United States, the concept is still gaining traction in South Africa.

In the US, many people are drawn to the lifestyle for its flexibility, lower living costs and opportunity to connect with nature.

Van life advocates often highlight the ability to work remotely, travel freely, and embrace minimalism as key benefits.

However, in South Africa, concerns such as safety, infrastructure and limited campsite availability can make the lifestyle more challenging.

Mixed reactions from followers

The Logan family’s plans have sparked debate online, with supporters and sceptics weighing in on their decision.

@hennessygiven commented: “To be honest,  I wouldn’t recommend it because it’s small and sleeping in a car in some areas can be unsafe, but overall it has advantages and disadvantages.”

@Maili Mooros noted: “For that price, you can actually build a house.”

@Kiki said: “Honestly, as a Capetownian - I’m looking to do the same thing. But I’ve always wanted to live in a caravan or RV. Nobody corporate, nothing. Just free.”

Meanwhile, @Mortz Outdoor Accessories added: “ Very nice adventurers' journey. Explore the country and enjoy it as a family. You can do a TV program of your journey to educate and share your RV experiences. Enjoy.”

Safety and practicality concerns

Despite concerns - particularly around safety and raising young children in a confined space - the couple says that they are prepared.

They plan to stay at campsites across the country rather than parking in isolated or potentially unsafe areas.

They also addressed concerns about raising a newborn in an RV, explaining that their own upbringing has shaped their perspective.

“As people who grew up in hokies (shack) and some people actually live in RVs for a living, I don’t think it’s going to be such an issue for us to live in one with a newborn baby because it happens all the time. It’s the way some people actually live,” they said.

A lifestyle driven by experience

For the Logans, the decision ultimately comes down to prioritising experience over convention.

Their journey reflects a growing global trend where families choose alternative living arrangements to pursue freedom, flexibility, and shared experiences.

Whether their decision proves to be the best or worst they have ever made remains to be seen - but for now, the Logan family is ready to take the road less travelled.
