No matter where you are in life, home remains home, and for Jonathan Butler, that feeling still seems tied to Cape Town.
The Mother City has been dealing with its usual winter chill this week, but last Sunday told a different story.
The weather cleared, the sun came out, and the harbour turned into one of those soft postcard scenes that Cape Town does so well when it behaves.
Butler took the opportunity to get out on the water, sharing Instagram posts from a boat.
His caption stayed low-key, but the visuals did the talking.
“Sunday afternoon sunset sailing in Cape Town weather, an incredible city, an incredible place I call home. Come and sail with me in Cape Town,” he wrote, as he drifted between calm seas and golden light near the Waterfront.
It is that classic Cape Town mood swing again, one minute wind and cold fronts, the next pure postcard weather that makes you forget the layers you wore the day before.
Butler’s connection to Cape Town is not just sentimental. He was born in Athlone on the Cape Flats and started his music journey in South Africa before building an international career that took him to the United States.
He spent many years based abroad, including time in California while touring and recording globally, which helped shape his sound and profile on the international stage.
Even so, Cape Town has remained part of his story.
Over the years he has returned for performances and special appearances, often linking his music back to themes of identity, memory and home.
His career has stretched across jazz, gospel and contemporary soul with a catalogue that has taken him to major stages around the world.
