Do you find yourself struggling to close your suitcase before a trip?

If so, you’re not alone.

A recent study revealed that female travellers tend to overpack, taking an average of 60 clothing items for a week-long trip, despite only needing around 34.

This trend has sparked conversations on social media, prompting many to reflect on their packing habits.

Understanding the overpacking phenomenon

According to a survey conducted by a travel insurance site, 72% of the 2,000 participants admitted to overpacking.

Among these, 65% reported difficulties in closing their suitcases, while 58% exceeded airline weight limits.

Surprisingly, even with their bags bursting at the seams, 42% of respondents planned to shop for more clothes while abroad.

On average, women pack 19 tops but only wear 10, and they bring 16 bottoms but use just eight.

As someone who often finds themselves in the same predicament, I can relate to the struggle of packing for different activities

Depending on the trip's duration, I typically prepare 2 to 3 outfits a day, ensuring I have options for brunch, dinner and activities like hiking or swimming.

I also pack an extra t-shirt, just in case.

Why do we overpack?

The primary reason for overpacking is indecision.

Many women confess to packing extra outfits “just in case” or due to uncertainty about what they’ll feel like wearing on any given day.

In fact, around 58% of participants cited difficulty in choosing outfits ahead of time as a significant factor.

Several other reasons contribute to this packing dilemma:

Preparing for unexpected weather: Changes in weather can lead to packing more items than necessary.

Outfit variety: The desire to match different looks to various days or events can result in overpacking.

Fear of missing out: The fear of not having the right outfit for spontaneous activities can lead to extra items being packed.

Comfort and control: Familiar items can provide a sense of security in unfamiliar environments.

Past experiences: Previous trips where something essential was forgotten can reinforce the habit of overpacking.

Societal and gender norms: Historical expectations for women to have more elaborate outfits can influence packing habits, although this is gradually changing.

Sensory needs: For some individuals, particularly those with ADHD, bringing extra layers or options can help manage sensory sensitivities in new places.

Tips for packing light

To combat the overpacking trend, consider these strategies for packing light:

Clothing and shoes

Mix and match: Select versatile items that can create multiple outfits. Stick to a base colour palette, such as black, navy, or grey, with an accent colour for variety.

Layering: Pack thin, versatile layers, like merino wool or a light jacket, instead of a bulky coat.

Limit items: Aim for 3 bottoms and 4-7 tops, planning to do laundry after about a week.

Shoes: Limit yourself to 1-2 pairs, such as walking shoes and sandals or dressier shoes. Wear the bulkiest pair on travel days.

Toiletries and electronics

Downsize: Use travel-sized containers or solid toiletries, like shampoo bars and soap bars, to save space and weight.

Multi-use products: Opt for products that serve multiple purposes.

Electronics: Bring compact devices, multi-port adapters, and consider travel-sized cords.

Packing techniques

Packing cubes: Use compression cubes to save significant space and keep your belongings organised.

Rolling clothes: Roll your clothes tightly to minimise wrinkles and maximise space.

Wear bulky items: Wear your heaviest jacket and shoes on travel days to lighten your luggage.

Mindset and planning

Make a list: Create a detailed packing list and eliminate anything you’re unsure about.

Wash and re-wear: Don’t pack for every “what if”. Instead, plan to do laundry or buy essentials at your destination.

Choose the right bag: Select a lightweight, appropriately sized bag that’s easy to carry.

By implementing these strategies, you can streamline your packing process and travel light without sacrificing style or comfort.

Embrace the freedom of travelling with less, and enjoy your adventures without the burden of overpacking.
