When planning a holiday, safety should be a top priority.

While it’s tempting to focus solely on what your travel destination has to offer, travellers should always be aware of weather patterns and risks before making bookings.

Whether you’re headed to the sunny beaches of Thailand, the vibrant cities of Brazil or the historical landmarks of Italy, being fully aware of the positives and negatives of a particular destination is key to making an informed decision.

Here are a few destinations abroad that, despite being popular, carry risks.

Thailand

Thailand is a favourite for many travellers; however, recent political unrest has been a concern.

Some areas of the country, particularly near the Thailand-Cambodia border, have seen an escalation in violent clashes.

Travellers are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially in regions like Buriram, Si Saket and Narathiwat.

Safety tip: Exercise extreme caution in these areas, avoid non-essential travel to high-risk zones, and stay up-to-date with local news.

Brazil

Known for its vibrant culture and stunning scenery, Brazil attracts millions of tourists each year.

However, the rise in gang-related violence poses serious safety concerns, particularly in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Salvador, where crime rates are alarmingly high.

Incidents of armed robbery, hijackings and shootings have been reported.

Safety tip: Stick to tourist areas, avoid travelling at night and keep valuables secure.

Mexico

While Mexico is a top destination for tourists, safety concerns shouldn't be overlooked.

Recent travel advisories highlight the risk of violent crime, including kidnappings in states like Guerrero, Michoacán and Sinaloa.

Safety tip: Avoid land travel after dark, stay in tourist areas and opt for air travel when possible.

Italy

Italy’s cultural appeal and world-renowned landmarks continue to draw international tourists, but there are warnings about potential terrorism threats.

While the risk of terrorism remains low, large public gatherings are often targets.

Additionally, petty crimes like pickpocketing remain a significant concern, particularly in crowded tourist areas.

Safety tip: Remain vigilant in crowded areas and stay informed about security measures during major events.

Along with political and security risks, natural disasters have also become a growing concern.

The Bahamas

The Bahamas faces increased hurricane risks, particularly from May to November.

Safety tip: Make sure to check the weather reports before and during your stay. Be prepared for any possibility, such as having to change or cancel your trip, being stranded abroad, facing major power outages or being forced to stay in your hotel room.

Ecuador and the Philippines

Whether it’s hurricanes in the Bahamas or flooding in Ecuador, travellers should always be aware of weather patterns and environmental risks before heading out.

Ecuador and the Philippines are prone to heavy rains (floods), which can lead to road closures and travel disruptions.

Safety tip: Stay informed of weather updates and, in an emergency, follow local authorities' instructions. Be prepared to evacuate if necessary and keep valuables and important documents in waterproof containers.

These advisories are not meant to scare travellers but to ensure they are aware of risks such as political instability, crime or natural disasters.
