Selfies may seem like harmless fun, but a new global study has revealed a darker reality: in some countries, the pursuit of the perfect picture has become deadly.

Researchers have identified where people are most at risk of injury or death while snapping self-portraits, uncovering a troubling link between social media culture and risky behaviour.

The research, conducted by personal injury law firm, The Barber Law Firm, analysed selfie-related incidents worldwide between March 2014 and May 2025.

Using reports sourced from Google News, the study only included cases where taking a selfie directly resulted in injury or death.

India tops the list

India emerged as the most dangerous country, responsible for 42.1% of all reported incidents. Of the 271 casualties, 214 were fatalities and 57 were injuries.

Experts suggest a combination of densely populated areas, easy access to hazardous environments such as cliffs and train tracks, and the influence of social media culture are driving the high numbers.

The United States ranked second, with 45 casualties (37 deaths and eight injuries), followed by Russia with 19 incidents, 18 of which were fatal. Pakistan took fourth place with 16 selfie-related deaths, while Australia came fifth with 15 cases, including 13 deaths and two injuries.

The study also identified falling as the leading cause of selfie-related deaths worldwide, accounting for 46% of all cases.

Rooftops, cliffs and tall structures remain the most common and most dangerous settings for these tragedies.

The quest for likes and viral content often pushes individuals into taking unnecessary risks. This mirrors other hazardous online trends, such as dangerous TikTok challenges, which similarly prioritise digital attention over personal safety.
