The South African Navy Choir has made history by winning the championship title at the first-ever Chief of the South African National Defence Force (CSANDF) Choir Competition, an event aimed at promoting musical excellence, discipline and unity across the Defence Force.

The inaugural competition, held at Thaba Tshwane City Hall, brought together choirs from across the SANDF.

Participants were divided into two categories: the Standard Category, featuring the South African Army,  Air Force and Navy choirs, and the Chamber Category, which included the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS), Chief of Joint Operations/Special Forces and the Logistics Division.

In preparation for the event, the Navy Choir attended an intensive training camp at the South African Naval College in Gordon’s Bay, where members refined their performance under the guidance of Band Master and Choir Conductor, Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) E. L. Twala.

Despite several challenges during training, the group's discipline and teamwork were key to their success

The South African Navy Choir achieved the highest marks in the Western,  African and Own Choice music categories, earning the Overall Championship in the Standard Category and becoming the first winners of the Chief of SANDF Choir Competition.

Able Seaman N. P. Malaza also received recognition for her individual performance, winning first place in the Soprano Solo category and being named the Overall Best Soloist of the competition.

WO1 Twala said the win reflected the commitment and effort of every member of the choir.

“This victory is the result of dedication, discipline and teamwork, qualities that define the South African Navy.

"Our members put in tireless effort during training, even through challenges beyond our control. This achievement proves what can be accomplished when we sing and serve with one purpose and passion,” he said.

He extended thanks to several key leaders for their support, including the Chief of the South African Navy, Acting Chief Fleet Staff Rear Admiral (JG) J. A. Mbotho, Captain J. Rustin-Patrick of the Naval College, officer commandings and unit managers, and Commander L. E. Madikizela, Director Naval Music.

The Chaplain General commended all participants, saying the competition marked a new chapter in SANDF history and reflected the organisation’s commitment to morale, unity and cultural pride through music.

"The South African Navy Choir’s achievement establishes them as the first champions of this national event and sets the standard for future competitions across the Defence Force."
