Opera enthusiasts and fashion lovers alike are in for a treat this October as Opera UCT presents a stylish rendition of the cherished operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss II. Perfectly timed to honour Strauss’s 200th birthday and to celebrate World Opera Day, this production promises a delightful blend of glamour and whimsy - all staged in the heart of Cape Town.
Under the artistic direction of Christine Crouse, this isn’t your traditional operetta. Die Fledermaus, often regarded as opera’s lively cousin, offers a thrilling mix of colour, couture, and comedy. Spectacular waltzes and iconic arias, such as the renowned "Mein Herr Marquis" (or "The Laughing Song"), ensure a sensory feast that will leave audiences tapping their toes.
Central to the charm of this production is the glittering party scene in Act 2, where both performers and audience members are invited to don their finest attire. Expect to mingle with Cape Town’s style elite and, on Gala Night, scheduled for Saturday, 25 October, audiences are especially encouraged to channel their inner ‘masqueraders’ with chic masks enhancing the night of elegance and mischief.
Gavin Rajah, a celebrated fashion designer, breathes life into the characters with bold and modern costumes layered with theatrical flair. His ingenious bat-inspired motifs serve as a nod to the title, as Die Fledermaus, which translates to "The Bat" in German, takes flight within the narrative. This is beautifully complemented by fresh set designs from Allegra Bernacchioni, combining artistry with extravagance.
Jeremy Silver, head of Opera UCT and conductor for the performances, encapsulates the essence of the production: “Fledermaus is pure, fizzy fun - but it also requires exquisite vocal control, comic timing, and razor-sharp ensemble work. The cast has risen to the challenge in spectacular fashion, and we invite everyone to come and celebrate not just the music of Strauss, but the vibrant future of opera in South Africa.”
The 2025 staging showcases a dynamic cast of emerging talent with dual performances from Molly Dzangare, Setsoane Ntseki, Rosa van der Dussen, Nica Reinke, Carmen Traut, Siphosihle Letsoso, Amos Nomnabo, and Sisa Mjekula. Adding an extra layer of comedic flair, Alan Committie brings his unique wit to life as Frosch, the jailer in one of Act 3’s pivotal speaking roles, ensuring laughs are as plentiful as the music.
If you’re an opera lover, a curious first-timer, a devotee of fashion or simply in search of an elegant and joy-filled night out, Die Fledermaus is the must-attend event you didn’t know you needed for this October in Cape Town.
