Local award-winning filmmaker Nic Matthee is making waves on the global stage, showcasing the rich culture and talent of the Cape Flats through his innovative non-profit initiative, Red Moon Performing Arts. By providing opportunities for enthusiastic, creative-minded youth and local community members, Matthee is allowing them to explore the worlds of film and theatre like never before.

His latest creation, The Meeting, premiered at the prestigious 67th Zinebe Film Festival in Spain earlier this year, a testament to his acclaimed narrative style and directorial prowess. Matthee has garnered accolades at various international film festivals, including one in Germany, for Death Angel and at the Cinevo Film Festival in Phoenix, Arizona. Currently, he is in production for his latest film, In Sheep's Clothing, which is scheduled for release on 27 August 2026.

With a cast featuring actress Nadia Gouws alongside local talents Tyrique Williams and Conwill Bowie, Matthee's new film aims to shine a light on gender-based violence while exploring the complexity of a woman mislabelled as a villain. The narrative seeks to uncover the underlying reasons for her transformation into what society deems a monster, detailing how trauma can lead to isolation and despair.

“This woman finds herself cornered, faced with the choice of embracing darkness or emerging victorious,” explains Matthee.

As the film is set to include numerous graphic scenes, the filmmaker stresses that such violence will not be glamorised. Instead, it is presented in a stylised manner intended to reflect the protagonist's inner rage and turmoil. This unique storytelling approach provides cast members with a profound opportunity to understand the character's psyche, thereby shaping their performances through empathy and insight.

Nadia Gouws, a talented competitive dancer from Silversands in Kuilsriver, has been cast in the lead role of Lizel Landrieu. Gouws's journey with Matthee began on the set of Wally Wages the Smooth Criminal, where she captivated audiences as a dancer. Her experience expanded when she worked with the filmmaker on his initial short film The Black Disciple, where she contributed minor stunt work and participated in action choreography. “The adrenaline rush of acting is unparalleled,” Gouws remarks, reflecting on her growth within the arts under Matthee’s guidance.

Driven by the desire to uplift the community and nurture local talent, Matthee’s mission is to create life-altering experiences for the youth interested in the performing arts. He believes that engaging in the arts enhances confidence, teamwork, and unity among individuals. To fulfil this vision, he also offers complimentary acting classes at Roosendaal Secondary School, where students gain valuable skills in film, special effects, and scene design.

Having once won six international dance competitions as a performer in 1998, earning him the nickname “Floorkiller,” Matthee’s life took a turn when he faced significant challenges, including a period of homelessness in Cape Town. Emerging from adversity, he committed himself to transforming lives through the medium of film and theatre. His important work has given rise to various projects, with the Touched By Style community arts project, founded alongside Patrick Lategan, being a notable significant initiative.

In Sheep's Clothing” stands as a powerful narrative that not only recounts a young woman’s battle for freedom but also aims to resonate with many women who face similar hardships. Matthee shares his thoughts on the importance of exploring diverse storytelling: “Filmmakers should embrace risks and take a leap of faith, bringing fresh talents into the industry to bolster its growth. The future is uncertain—there is always an opportunity for exploration and enhancement.”

With a profound understanding of local culture and a mission to inspire, Nic Matthee continues to shine as a beacon for Cape Flats youth, guiding them towards a future where their artistry can truly flourish.
