“This competition brings together the heart of our community every year,” said Zoë Enslin, Marketing Manager of Capegate Shopping Centre. “We see families, friends, and neighbours cheering on the contestants while sharing stories and laughter. The braai is such an integral part of our heritage, and this event captures that spirit perfectly. Whether you’re a seasoned grill master or someone who just loves cooking for family, we want to see you there.”

The action-packed competition begins with round one, where the top ten finalists will create their version of the ultimate boerewors roll. Last year's entries elevated this classic dish to new gourmet heights, so the pressure is on to impress the judges. Those who survive this round will advance to the next, where they will be challenged to prepare the perfect steak, meticulously crafted to the judges' specifications.

Only three contestants will remain for the final round, where they will have two and a half hours to prepare their signature dish—one they submitted as part of their entry. The excitement culminates in a frantic R800 trolley dash through Checkers for fresh ingredients, ensuring an exhilarating experience for both participants and spectators. Judges will evaluate the dishes based on taste, creativity, technique, and presentation, all while celebrating authentic South African flair.

In addition to the main prize, the competition also features enticing rewards for the runners-up, with second place receiving a R2 500 Capegate gift card and third place taking home a R1 500 gift card. All finalists can look forward to goodie bags courtesy of Capegate and Checkers, making this a worthwhile experience for everyone involved. Moreover, the winning recipe will be highlighted on the Capegate Centre's website during National Braai Day week, allowing the community to recreate the champion dish in their own backyards.

This vibrant competition is open to South African residents aged 18 and over who live in Cape Town, with one entry permitted per person. Aspiring contestants can enter online at capegatecentre.co.za, where full terms and conditions are available.

From ladies’ teams to seasoned grill veterans, the annual challenge welcomes braai enthusiasts of all backgrounds and skill levels. With its roots firmly planted in Heritage Month celebrations, the event has become synonymous with community spirit, drawing crowds who come not only to witness the competition but also to connect with one another and celebrate shared traditions.

As the flames heat up and the entry deadline of 27 August approaches, potential contestants are encouraged to submit descriptions of their signature dishes and prepare for what promises to be another memorable day of South African culinary excellence.
